There's a disconnect here somewhere
Beauty is all around on this island, whether one sees it or not,
appreciates it or not, doesn't matter.
It Is!
There are certain moments when we can feel that all is in balance,
perfect - our place in this mystery is a given, and a blessing. In
gratitude we make offerings to What Is, repeatedly, and watch the
flowers, the rice and the fruits fade as does the smoke from the
incense, disappearing back to the earth and sky which first gave them
to us. All things will pass. So all is in order, our instinctive
connection to Mother Earth is there - and this is where the disconnect
seems to come in.
How could we not see that each one dropping one wrapper, one plastic
bag, one carton, one diaper, is quite simply not acknowledging the
beauty and awesomeness of our Great Bumi? How could we not look at the
mounds of rubbish on the beaches and not feel pain at what we are
causing? This doesn't have to be about getting angry or blaming anyone
or anything; individual resolve to not-pollute should simply be one
way of expressing our gratitude. Offerings of plastic and trash are
not good offerings.
Ironically we live in a society in which many seem quite obsessive
about sweeping, starting very early in the morning - the customary
wake up call along with the cockerels. Are these really the same
individuals who after their enjoyable outing to the beach or the water
gardens, the park or the mountain, (who have even woken earlier to be
able to sweep the compound before they left,) are these same people
the ones who leave all the rubbish they have accumulated during their
fun excursion just lying there as a gift to Mother Earth? Something is
definitely wrong. As long as we only see our own patch, our own family
area as significant, and 'out there' as no man's land, nothing can
change. Making offerings with the admirable intention to regain or
retain the balance of life which pulses through all of this amazing
creation, in the end is merely paying lip service - and absolving
ourselves also of any responsibility to anything beyond our own small
lives.
We can blame all we like but the fault is ours. And there we can find
the solution.
